How To Make Baby Powder

ClaysSstock

Ever thought about making a body powder? I like to use them after a shower when I use a body sugar or salt scrub in the shower.  The body powder is a great way to soften up your skin after getting all the dead skin off from the scrub.

I bet you are thinking it’s hard to make and time consuming, Right?  Well it’s pretty simple and not a lot of time is needed.  It’s also a great bonding time for you and friends and family!!

The ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

Making this body powder is great to use for yourself or give as a gift to someone you care about. From the young daughter or niece to the older sister or grandparent, this is something that all ages will love!

So with that being said let’s get started with some information on the products you can use to make your powder.

I use these three basic powders as a base:

1: Corn Starch

Probably the most inexpensive and toughest working ingredient you could put in your dusting powder. Cornstarch, has been used over the years for many different things besides cooking with, such as stinky feet, putting in foot lockers or even a fridge to help with the smells that are not so pleasant. SO this will aid you in keeping your body smelling fresh and clean.

2: Kaolin clay (or any cosmetic clay)

Kaolin Clay offers extra drying powder, and is an outstanding addition in small doses to any dusting powder you choose. It’s going to help the powder stick to the skin in a very light dust layer).

3: Baking Soda

This is an extra efficient deodorizing powder, you will want to use this in smaller portions but will also help soften the skin a bit.

You may also use these flours in you powders:

Rice flower, Arrowroot powder, corn flour and oat flour

Now to Fragrance your powder!

There are 2 ways to do this.

1: Using Herbs and Flowers:

A: you need to pick the fragrance you would like

B: you will want to grind them into a fine powder as much as humanly possible. To do this you will most likely need a coffee grinder, spice grinder, or superbly efficient food processor.

C: Now when the grinding is finished you will want to use a sifter to get all the bigger parts out so you are left with just the find powder of the herbs you have chosen.

Some herbs and flowers to consider:

Lavender, Cinnamon, Rose, Vanilla, Peppermint, Chamomile or even Calendula just to name a few but let your nose be your guide you can get creative with this.

Now let’s get to the Essential Oils:

With this part you may choose any essential oil your heart desires (suggestion here, make sure they go with the herbs you are using) you don’t want the powder to smell funky  :O)

Here is a list of some Essential Oils I love to use in mine.

Lavender, Rose, Orange, Tangerine, Peppermint (for a pick me up), Jasmine, cardamom, maybe even a sweet Basil.

The process is limitless just use your imagination and get going!!

Have fun with it, have your daughter or granddaughter, aunt, mom or a friend give you a hand and make a day of fun just to get together.

Here is a recipe or two to get you started!

Pick me up Powder

  • 1-1/2 c. cornstarch
  • 1/2 c. baking soda
  • 3 Tablespoons finely ground dried peppermint leaves
  • 25 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 15 drops lemongrass essential oil (optional)

Combine all dry ingredients a large bowl whisk the ingredients together. Then add essential oils one drop at a time, whisking as you go. Break up any clumps that may form with your fingers. Transfer powder into a small glass or BPA plastic container and use after bathing, you may also use the cardboard sifting tubes if you like.

Spice of Life Powder

  • 1-1/2 c. cornstarch
  • 1/2 c. baking soda
  • ½ cup Kaolin clay
  • 3 Tablespoons finely ground cinnamon leaves
  • 20 drops cassia Essential Oil
  • 15 drops cardamom Essential oil

Combine all dry ingredients a large bowl whisk the ingredients together. Then add essential oils one drop at a time, whisking as you go. Break up any clumps that may form with your fingers. Transfer powder into a small glass or BPA plastic container and use after bathing, you may also use the cardboard sifting tubes if you like.

If you are wanting to try on your own here is the instructions to do so

  1. For one batch (which can last you for months) use 1 to 2 c. base powder like any of the flours, arrowroot, or cornstarch.
  2. Use 1/4 to 1/2 c. baking soda and/or clay.
  3. Use no more than 3-4 tablespoon finely ground herb/flower.
  4. Use no more than 40-65 drops essential oil either single or in combination – depending on how aromatic you want the powder to be.
  5. Add all dry ingredients together first and stir with a whisk to combine.
  6. Then add your essential oils, while dropping in the oils continue stirring with the whisk. You don’t want the oils to clump.
  7. If you do end up with clumps, just break them up with your fingers or the whisk if you can.
