Essential Oils for Keeping Warm This Winter
Since winter is coming and in some places, is upon us it is not uncommon to find ourselves wanting to stay in bed under the covers a little bit longer to keep warm. I will confess, I find it much easier to get out of bed when it is much warmer outside! And with that being said, the colder weather brings with it the misery of blocked noses, cold feet, aching joints.
One of the best things about essential oils is that they can awaken your dulled senses and lift your spirits during the gloomy months, and since many of them are antibacterial and antiviral they also can assist with fighting off all those winter ailments too, and that’s what makes aromatherapy the perfect tonic for the winter season.
Time for a winter warm-up
If you are someone whom suffers from poor circulation and always has cold feet and cold hands during this time of year, then a lot of the warming essential oils such as black pepper, cardamom, clove bud, ginger, juniper berry, marjoram and rosemary are just the thing for you. All you need to do is choose 3 oils from this list and add 4 drops of each to 15ml of your chosen carrier oil or lotion. Rub your blend into your cold frosty fingers or feet and you will feel a warm spark spread throughout your hands and feet as your circulation get moving.
Since these essential oils are heating and stimulating, it also makes them extremely effective at easing those every-day aches and pains, that can feel much worse in the winter months. You can also add these oils to a warm bath which is an amazing way to get warmed up just before bed for a good night’s rest or a way to get you up and moving in the morning. What an amazing way to use aromatherapy during the cold winter months.
Soothing foot soak
Here is another amazing way to try Essential oils this winter—try adding two drops each of ylang ylang, rose and bergamot oils to a foot soak to soothe away the stresses, strains and hangovers of the Holiday parties! You only need to use a total of 6 or 8 drops of essential oil, more is not necessarily better for achieving the desired result in aromatherapy.
A blend of geranium, lavender and cedarwood is heavenly, as is Roman chamomile, frankincense and bergamot. A blend containing either rosewood, niaouli or jasmine is bound to be relaxing, but if you do not have any of these oils there are plenty of other relaxing ones to choose from. Here are a few more you can choose from cinnamon, fennel, vetiver, marjoram just to name a few.
Breathing better
If you are like a lot of people that suffer with blocked sinuses or congestion during the winter, you might find that using cypress, eucalyptus radiata (only for adults), silver fir, frankincense, peppermint, Cedarwood (for children) or tea tree oils in your diffuser or in an inhaler can bring incredible relief. If and when you have a case of the sniffles or even a runny nose remember, these essential oils all are highly effective and have antiviral properties too, and are perfect to kill those horrible winter bugs.
Another way to use the essential oils if you don’t have a diffuser or burner, you can use them in a good old-fashioned steam inhalation; All you have to do is simply choose a selection of 3 oils from the list and add 2 or 3 drops of each to a bowl of steaming hot water. Please note that anyone with asthma should not use this method because it involves using steam directly over the facial area.
Otherwise, you can massage these oils on to the area above the upper lip, on the tip of the nose. Use should use small, circular movement (from your nose up your cheek line to your ears) with your fingertips avoiding the eye area, and your stuffy nose will soon begin to clear. Make sure not to add no more than 3 drops in total of any essential oil you have chosen into 5ml of carrier oil.
Natural protection
Also, know that using aromatherapy carrier oils such as Coconut oil, Almond oil, Grape seed oil or even Jojoba oil is one of the finest ways to keep your skin soft and supple throughout the cold winter weather. These natural oils are protective and can be used effectively without essential oils added to them to look after your skin. The texture and fluid nature of carrier oils have a natural affinity with the skin, and are very easily absorbed.
You can gently massage a few drops onto the face and neck area a couple times a day during the cooler weather and your skin with in time will show the benefits. You can also use them on your legs, since they need protection too as they often feel and show the effects of cold weather first.
