What to expect from a full aromatherapy consultation
I am assuming that you have experimented with essential oils at home since you are reading this (maybe in a diffuser or in baths or even in an inhaler or possibly in a lotion) but want to use them more to support your overall health and wellness, if that is what you are thinking then you may want to consider booking a consultation. This is where we as a team can discuss your specific needs and wants so that we can develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Aromatherapy consultation
Now let’s get right to the subject! What is a one-on-one consultation, it is an important aspect of using aromatherapy for your health and wellness, it will assist the aromatherapist to complete an assessment so that a treatment plan can be developed for you specifically. When you are making an aromatherapy appointment for the first time, don’t be surprised if the aromatherapist asks you some questions. At the time of your appointment or in the scheduling of your appointment, the aromatherapist may also give you details on their policy relating to missed appointments as well as what services are provided. They may ask you to sign some paperwork before getting started as well. This sets the table to manage your expectations, this can also save time and avoid awkwardness at the appointment itself.
But before providing the treatment, the therapist will need to gather some information from you relating to your medical history, general health, diet, lifestyle, the reason for treatment, and, even scent preferences, all of which are covered in more depth below. It is quite usual for the first consultation to take some time. During the consultation, please ensure that you give complete and accurate information to the therapist, as this helps them design a tailored treatment plan for you that is best suited for your individual needs.

This is taken as essential oils may have contra-indications related to the medical conditions that you may have which means certain essential oils should not be used within your care plan. This is because the treatment may worsen an existing issue or symptom or problem or create other
issues altogether. Your aromatherapist will want to know, for example, whether you have medical conditions such as high or low blood pressure, liver disease, skin disease, diabetes, cancer, severe bruising, epilepsy, unrecognizable lumps or bumps, are recovering from an
operation or have recent scar tissue. Of course, this list is not everything but it is a guide ton having you realize the importance of being totally honest with your aromatherapist. If this is the case, The aromatherapist will want to obtain medical consent if you are on medication and/or have any medical condition prior to carrying out an aromatherapy treatment. Once the medical consent has been signed and sent or given back to the aromatherapist, the aromatherapist can be assured that it is safe to proceed with treatment. However, your aromatherapist may need to make some adjustments. For example, if you have high blood pressure (HBP), they will look at essential oils that do not interact with your issue or if you take medications for this they will do their best to use oils that will not interact with your medication. Your medical history may also mean that certain essential oils are contra-indicated.
For example: Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), has a contra-indication for anyone who has HBPor Epilepsy, whereas Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) may lower it so it is not recommended for those with LBP. Naturally, a trustworthy aromatherapist will not advise that you refrain from carrying out medical instructions or stop taking any prescribed medication. Rather they should encourage you to tell your Doctor that you are going to be using Essential Oils as well.
The aromatherapist will need to also know about your general health from a physical, mental, and social perspective. The aromatherapist will also be able to gauge some of this information from the responses given in your medical history. However, the aromatherapist will also ask about your stress level, if you drink alcohol when and how much, and whether you smoke. In addition to this, your aromatherapist will also want to know your skin type such as whether you suffer from sensitivities or allergies. Certain essential oils are more suited to particular skin types while others should be avoided. For example, Lemon (Citrus limon) for example is not recommended for those with sensitive skin; it is also a photosensitive oil which means exposure to sunlight should be avoided after use.
All of the details you give your aromatherapist will enable them to get an overview of your general health and the factors that may be affecting it. The aromatherapist may also ask whether you have any concerns that you believe are impacting your wellbeing.
Most people are aware that eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important aspect of maintaining good overall health and well-being. Eating healthy can make such a difference in helping you feel in top form. While the aromatherapist is unable to provide nutritional advice unless, of course, they are also professionally qualified to do so. You should be trying to alter your lifestyle to meet your health care goals.
The aromatherapist may also ask you questions about your daily lifestyle. (for example) Do you have a sedentary lifestyle or an active one? What sort of hobbies and interests do you have? Do you feel that your lifestyle impacts your overall health and well-being positively or negatively?
The responses you give will help the aromatherapist determine which oils to use. If you are, for example, particularly busy and find it hard to switch off, the aromatherapist may decide to use calming oils, such as Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) Neroli (Citrus aurantium), and Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) to name but a few. On the other hand, if you are experiencing a low mood, the aromatherapist may decide to use more energizing uplifting oils, such as Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), or even Peppermint (Mentha piperita), and Lemon (Citrus limon). With all that we’ve discussed above the aromatherapist needs to know your medical history before making their final selection because some oils may be contra-indicated.
The aromatherapist will ask a few questions to find out the reason for treatment and the type of aromas you like. Your responses will determine the choice of essential oil as well as the method
of usage. Some of these methods could be diffusing with a room diffuser or a nasal diffuse, lotion or salve or maybe a room spray just to name a few.
Once the consultation is finished, the aromatherapist will select the most appropriate essential oils and carrier based on all of the details that you have provided.
There are several other methods including bathing, compressing, and inhalation; it will depend upon the purpose of your visit as to which method is deemed best for you. For example, if you are experiencing stress, the aromatherapist may develop a treatment plan that comprises both a
nasal inhaler that you carry with you and a bathing product to use at home. The aromatherapist will ensure that any product given to you to use at home is labeled so you know how to use it correctly and safely. As a rule of thumb, it is advisable to add approximately five drops of an aromatherapy blend to warm running bath water (diluted first in a carrier oil). Ideally, you should take time to relax for around 20 to 30 minutes taking time to enjoy the aromatic scent. If, however, you are suffering from sinusitis or headaches, the therapist may very well make up a product for you to inhale. Again, the aromatherapist will need to ensure the product is labeled correctly. It is quite straightforward to use oils in this way. For clients who are experiencing muscle tension or tightness, the aromatherapist may provide a blended essential oil product to use in a therapeutic ointment or salve or maybe even a hot or cold compress. Both hot and cold compresses have specific purposes including increasing blood circulation and reducing pain and congestion in the affected area. Again, if you have any medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and open wounds that need to be considered when using this method, again the importance of sharing your medical history with the aromatherapist.
At all of the follow-up consultations, the therapist will undertake a short assessment with you to determine whether there have been any changes to your medical history, general health, diet and lifestyle, and so on. This ensures that the oils best suited for your individual needs that were selected are still working properly and the way they are meant to be utilized. At each follow up the same questions may be asked and changes may be made based on your answers so always be very honest with your aromatherapist to get the best possible care and usage out of your aroma care treatment program.
Each consultation can be set up for an in-person visit or via a social media platform such as zoom or Google.
